Ludhiana, Feb 2: Federal authorities in Ludhiana prevented a significant shipment of narcotics from reaching international markets following a targeted operation at a local courier facility. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 12.118 kilograms of opium meticulously hidden within seven separate parcels.

The operation was initiated after the DRI Ludhiana Zonal Unit received specific intelligence regarding suspicious consignments. These packages, originating from Punjab, were addressed to various recipients across Canada and the United States. Upon inspection, officers discovered 30 packets of the illegal substance stashed inside everyday items, including kitchen utensils and adult diapers.

The market value of the confiscated opium is estimated at approximately Rs 60.59 lakh. Officials noted that the smugglers utilized household and food items as a cover to bypass security protocols. “A thorough examination of the parcels resulted in the recovery of 30 packets,” a DRI representative stated while discussing the breach of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

This incident marks a continued trend of attempting to smuggle narcotics through postal services in the region. In a similar case last November, authorities intercepted a quilt-wrapped package destined for overseas. In that instance, 735 grams of opium were found wrapped in carbon paper and hidden within the bedding.

The agency has confirmed that the investigation remains active as they work to identify the network behind the booking of these parcels. The focus remains on tracing the source of the opium and the intended recipients abroad.
