25 Jail Officials Suspended

CHANDIGARH, June 28:  Against corruption and criminal collusion inside state prisons, the government has suspended 25 jail department officials, including three Deputy Superintendents and two Assistant Superintendents. The action signals a serious push to address irregularities and dismantle drug networks that have taken root behind bars.

The suspensions were ordered following a series of internal reports pointing to widespread misconduct and complicity among jail staff. These included allegations of facilitating drug trafficking, colluding with inmates, and failing to uphold prison security protocols.

“This is not just a disciplinary measure—it’s part of a comprehensive effort to overhaul the system,” a senior government spokesperson said Friday. “We are determined to ensure transparency, efficiency, and accountability in prison management.”

The government’s crackdown comes amid increasing public concern over the porous nature of jails and the ease with which narcotics and contraband are being trafficked. According to sources familiar with the developments, the suspended officials are suspected of playing varying roles in enabling illegal activities, either through direct involvement or willful negligence.

While the government has not yet made public the complete list of charges or named all the suspended officials, the spokesperson indicated that further steps, including criminal investigations and departmental inquiries, could follow. “We expect this action to send a strong message and improve the functioning of our prisons,” the spokesperson added.

The jail department has faced mounting criticism over the past year, with several high-profile incidents exposing the prevalence of drug abuse and mobile phone usage among inmates. The latest crackdown, sources said, is part of a broader initiative led by the Home Department to restore order and discipline in correctional facilities.

Officials say this is the first phase of a longer process of internal reform, and more suspensions or transfers may be on the cards as investigations proceed.

Further details regarding the individual cases and potential legal consequences are awaited.
