Chandigarh, October 5 – Punjab’s Transport Department has trained 27,500 young drivers under a government initiative to provide professional driving skills, enhance road safety, and create employment opportunities for the state’s youth, according to Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar.

Since June 2023, the Regional Driving Training Centre (RDTC) in Malerkotla, established in collaboration with Ashok Leyland Limited, has been at the forefront of this effort, he said.

“The programme targets both rural and urban youth, addressing the shortage of qualified commercial drivers while promoting disciplined and safe driving practices.”

Looking ahead, the state plans to expand training facilities by setting up driving schools at 21 automated driving test tracks across Punjab, the minister said.

For the past four years, the office of the State Transport Commissioner has also been empaneling agencies to provide online training solutions to residents.

“Training at Malerkotla goes beyond vehicle handling,” said Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar.

“Drivers are equipped to respond to emergencies, prioritize passenger safety, and practice road discipline. The centre is transforming Punjab’s driving landscape and inspiring a new generation of skilled drivers.”

The initiative is designed not only to prepare youth for careers in the state transport fleet but also to open opportunities in national and international logistics sectors. The figure of 27,500 represents more than a statistic—it symbolizes a commitment to uplift thousands of families across the state.

The Mann government’s focus on human resources complements its infrastructure plans. A skilled workforce improves transport efficiency, reduces accidents, and contributes to overall economic growth.

“Your hard work and talent will not go in vain,” the government message to youth reads. “Punjab will recognize and empower it.”
