Chhattisgarh, Nov 4: At least four people were killed and several others injured after a passenger train collided with a stationary goods train near Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh on Tuesday afternoon, railway officials said.

The collision occurred around 4 p.m. when a Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) passenger train traveling from Gevra in Korba district to Bilaspur rammed into a goods train ahead of it between the Gatora and Bilaspur railway stations.

“Some passengers are still trapped under one of the coaches that derailed upon impact,” a senior railway official said, adding that emergency teams were working continuously to rescue those still stuck inside.

Visuals from the scene showed a coach of the MEMU train mounted onto a wagon of the goods train, with rescue workers attempting to cut through twisted metal to reach those inside.

“A few of the injured have already been taken to nearby hospitals,” a senior police officer told PTI, noting that efforts were underway to retrieve the remaining trapped passengers. He did not disclose the exact number of injured.

Railway authorities said all available resources had been mobilized at the site. Medical teams and technical staff were rushed from Bilaspur to assist in relief operations. “We are doing everything possible to ensure those injured receive timely medical attention,” another railway official noted.

The cause of the crash is yet to be determined. An inquiry has been ordered, officials said, as rescue operations continued into the evening.
