Chandigarh, 17 December 2024: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued stern directives to ensure security during the upcoming Municipal Corporation and Municipal Council elections.

The court ordered the Punjab Election Commission to deploy sufficient security personnel at each polling booth to prevent any potential disturbances or malpractice.

In an earlier order, the High Court had mandated the videography of the entire election process to ensure transparency and accountability. The court stressed that there should be no rigging or interference during the elections, and voters must be able to cast their ballots freely and without hindrance.

Responding to petitions for increased security, the court reiterated its order to the State Election Commission to provide adequate police personnel at all polling booths on election day. The petitioners expressed concern over violence and voter intimidation during previous elections, specifically the Panchayat elections, and urged that such incidents must be prevented.

The court emphasized that the deployment of security forces is crucial to ensuring a peaceful election, where voters can exercise their rights without fear of violence or coercion.
