Mohali, Aug 21 — A 62-year-old man was killed after being run over by a speeding car reportedly driven by a university student on the Siswan–Chandigarh highway near the Air Force Station in New Chandigarh on Wednesday morning, police said Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Satnam Singh, a resident of Hoshiarpur village near Mullanpur. According to Inspector Amandeep Trikha, SHO of Mullanpur police station, a Swift Dzire (registration CH04C4845) struck Singh after he suddenly appeared on the road. “Preliminary probe suggests the car was being driven by a girl student of a private university, with three other students — two boys and another girl — seated inside,” Trikha said.

Sources said the occupants belong to influential families, and the girl at the wheel is the daughter of a businessman based in South Africa.

No FIR has been registered. Trikha said the victim’s family had submitted an affidavit requesting that no action be taken. “The son of the deceased requested that no FIR be registered against the students. Therefore, we have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS),” he said.

Asked about reports that empty beer bottles were found in the car, Trikha confirmed bottles were recovered but said medical examination showed the students were not under the influence of alcohol.

Eyewitnesses told police that Singh suddenly emerged from roadside bushes and stepped onto the highway without noticing the approaching vehicle. His head was crushed under the wheels, and he died instantly. Witnesses said the students stopped immediately, called an ambulance, and shifted him to a hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Satnam Singh is survived by his wife and son, who works with a private company.
