NEW DELHI, Nov 10: Eight people were killed and several others injured when a car exploded near the Red Fort on Monday evening, triggering panic and a massive security response in the national capital, officials said.
According to preliminary information, the blast occurred in a Maruti Eco van parked near the Lal Qila Metro Station around 6.55 pm. The explosion was powerful enough to engulf nearby cars in flames and shatter glass panels at the metro station.
Seven fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the blaze, and cooling operations were still underway late in the evening. “The fire has been brought under control, and we are ensuring no secondary explosion occurs,” a Delhi Fire Services official said.
The Delhi Police’s special cell, forensic teams, and K9 units have cordoned off the area. Authorities are investigating whether the explosion was accidental or deliberate. “We are examining all angles, including foul play,” a senior police officer said.
Traffic around Red Fort has been halted, and the city has been placed on high alert. Security has been tightened at metro stations, markets, and other crowded areas across Delhi.
Officials have urged residents to stay calm and avoid sharing unverified information on social media. Further details are awaited.
