Gatka Promoter Harjit Singh Grewal Becomes Additional Director

Chandigarh, March 26: Harjit Singh Grewal, a state awardee and Joint Director in the Information and Public Relations Department, Punjab, has been promoted to Additional Director.

Following his promotion, which was approved during the department’s promotion committee meeting chaired by Secretary Malwinder Singh Jaggi, Grewal formally assumed his new role on Wednesday.

Renowned internationally as a Gatka promoter, Grewal holds a law degree and a master’s in journalism from Punjabi University, Patiala. A native of Singhāṅ Di Sakraudi village in Sangrur district, he has dedicated nearly 17 years to promoting Gatka—a Sikh martial art—on the global stage.

His efforts have focused on gaining recognition for Gatka as an official sport, preserving it as part of Sikh heritage, and expanding its reach worldwide.

For his contributions, Grewal has received numerous accolades from domestic and international organizations, including the Punjab government’s ‘State Award,’ the ‘Seva Award’ in Dubai, and the ‘Sikh Achievers Award’ in Mumbai.

A former science student at Ranbir College, Sangrur, and Akal College, Mastuana Sahib, Grewal’s promotion has been met with joy by residents of his village and surrounding areas.

He began his career as an Information and Public Relations Officer in 2001 and has since served over a dozen ministers, as well as in the Vigilance Bureau and Punjab Police.

He also worked with the Deputy Chief Minister as Deputy Director. During his tenure as Joint Director, he successfully managed several branches of the department.
