India has said that it will no longer carry this treaty with Pakistan. Earlier also, the Modi government had talked about reviewing the Indus Water Treaty, which had infuriated Pakistan. In such a situation, this decision of India is believed to cause devastation in Pakistan. Pakistan gets a large amount of water from India through the Indus Water Treaty. Pakistan has repeatedly threatened that breaking  this Treaty would be a declaration of war. Pakistan’s Punjab and Sindh provinces depend on the water of these rivers. This will have a very bad effect on agriculture. This has infuriated the Shahbaz government.

What is the Indus Water Treaty?

In 1960, the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and former President of Pakistan Ayub Khan signed the Indus Water Treaty. Under this , India gets water from three eastern rivers – Ravi, Beas and Sutlej – while Pakistan gets water from the western rivers – Chenab, Jhelum and Indus. India and Pakistan can use this water for domestic purposes like hydro-power and irrigation. According to the agreement, India can also store 3.6 million acre feet of water on the western rivers for various purposes.

India’s Decision Violates International Laws

Basit has expressed his views by releasing a video regarding India’s decision to stop the Indus Water Treaty. The former Pakistani diplomat said that India cannot end the Treaty unilaterally. It violates international laws. Basit even said that the action taken by India does not matter. ‘The Indian government has taken a symbolic decision to stop Pakistan’s water to please its people. You cannot stop that.’

If there is no water there will be bloodshed

After this, Basit threatened India regarding the water of the Indus River and tried to scare Pakistan with the fear of nuclear bomb. Basit said, if Pakistan stops getting water and in the coming years India develops something that reduces the flow of water, then understand. If water does not flow in this river, then blood will flow.

Threat of nuclear bomb

Basit called the fight for Indus water a fight for Pakistan’s existence. He said, ‘Remember that this is not the Pakistan of 1971, which you can harm by conspiring. This is Pakistan after 1998.’ He was referring to Pakistan’s nuclear bomb test of 1998. He further said that this Pakistan has a lot given by God and we can do a lot too. If you go ahead and see once, you will get an idea of what Pakistan can do. Basit said that India will not be able to harm Pakistan.
