FEROZEPUR, June 2 — A 25-year-old sarpanch affiliated with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) allegedly died by suicide late Saturday night in the town of Guru Har Sahai, sending shockwaves through the local political and social circles.
According to initial information, the young sarpanch reportedly shot himself with his licensed pistol around 11:20 p.m., shortly after posting an emotional ghazal on his Facebook account. The post has since drawn widespread attention and concern among his acquaintances and political colleagues.
The motive behind the tragic act remains unclear. “No suicide note was found at the scene, and the family has not submitted any written complaint so far,” said the superintendent of police (investigation), adding that the investigation is ongoing.
The body was cremated on Sunday, and police have begun proceedings under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), which deals with cases of unnatural death.
As the community mourns the loss of a young grassroots leader, the incident has also raised questions about mental health awareness and the pressures faced by public representatives, especially at the village level.
