Himachal to Act Tough on Govt Schools with Poor Board Results

Shimla, June 18: To address poor academic outcomes in government schools, the Himachal Pradesh Education Department has decided to fix strict accountability for teachers and heads of institutions where board exam results fall below 25%.

At a review meeting held on Tuesday evening, Education Minister Rohit Thakur said teachers in underperforming schools with no staff shortage would face transfers, stopped increments, and even disciplinary action. “We will not spare schools where results are consistently poor despite a full teaching staff,” he said, citing the example of a school in Theog.

In contrast, schools and educators showing good results will be rewarded and encouraged, he added. The state will also begin monthly reviews with district deputy directors presenting performance reports.

Thakur said that 1,200 zero-enrollment schools have been identified, with 402 already merged and a decision pending on another 600 schools, awaiting the Chief Minister’s approval.

He added that rationalisation of staff and a review of current education policies are underway to ensure impactful reforms.
