Raipur Rani, June 20 — A day after a 24-year-old theft accused was found hanging inside the Raipur Rani police station, authorities have initiated disciplinary action against three personnel — the investigating officer, a constable, and the station munshi — all of whom have been transferred to police lines pending inquiry.

The deceased, a resident of Hangola village in the Raipur Rani area, was allegedly involved in a temple theft case. He was brought to the police station by local villagers who suspected him of the crime. According to DCP Srishti Gupta, the accused was interrogated and later left in a room where he reportedly hanged himself.

“The entire incident was captured on CCTV. The footage from the station, including the room where the suicide occurred, has been retrieved and sealed by the magistrate,” Gupta said, adding that a judicial inquiry is underway. “Appropriate action will be taken against anyone found guilty.”

A post-mortem examination was conducted at the civil hospital under tight police security following protests by the victim’s family, who alleged custodial torture. The family claimed the man’s death was not a suicide, but the result of police brutality.

In response to their complaint, a second FIR was registered under Sections 108, 115, and 61 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and Section 3 of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Those named in the complaint include Sarpanch Rakesh, Mukesh, Navdeep, Rakesh Bhagat, and Lalit — all residents of Hangola.

The first FIR against the deceased had been filed under Section 305 (theft) and Section 331(3) (lurking house-trespass or house-breaking) of the BNS.

Chief Judicial Magistrate also visited the site and recorded statements from the deceased’s family, villagers, and other key witnesses as part of the judicial process.

The family later performed the last rites of the deceased. As tensions remain high in the village, police presence has been increased, and further investigation continues.
