CHANDIGARH, July 12 — The Punjab State Election Commission on Saturday announced the schedule for by-elections to fill 90 vacant sarpanch and 1,711 panch seats across various gram panchayats in the state. Polling will be conducted on July 27.
The vacancies emerged following the general elections held on October 15, 2024, with several posts remaining unfilled, as confirmed by the Department of Rural Development and Panchayats.
As per the official schedule, nomination papers can be filed from July 14 to July 17, between 11 am and 3 pm, at the offices of the respective Returning Officers. The scrutiny of nominations will take place on July 18, while July 19 has been fixed as the last date for withdrawal of candidatures.
The commission stated that the by-elections are necessary to ensure the smooth functioning of local governance and complete representation at the grassroots level.
