Chamoli, 2 August — A landslide struck the dam site of the under-construction Vishnugad Pipalkoti Hydropower Project in Helang area of Jyotirmath on Saturday, injuring eight laborers and prompting an immediate response from authorities.
According to officials, the incident occurred while 40–50 laborers were working across various sections of the project being executed by THDC India Limited. Twelve workers were reportedly present in the section impacted directly by the landslide.
“Eight people have been injured in the incident, and there is no report of any loss of life,” Chamoli District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari said. “Rescue teams responded quickly, and all the injured were evacuated and shifted to nearby hospitals.”
Of the injured, four are receiving treatment at THDC Hospital. Two others, said to be seriously injured, are being treated at Swami Vivekananda Hospital in Pipalkoti. Another worker is receiving orthopaedic care locally, while one patient in critical condition has been referred to the Medical College in Srinagar.
The incident triggered a swift response from the Tehsil administration, local police, SDRF and health officials, who reached the site shortly after receiving information.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has issued a 24-hour flood warning from Saturday, citing a heightened risk of flooding in several districts, including Almora, Bageshwar, Chamoli, Champawat, Dehradun, Nainital, Pauri Garhwal, Pithoragarh, Tehri Garhwal and Uttarkashi.
Officials are on high alert across the region, with construction and travel activities being closely monitored amid ongoing heavy rainfall.
