New Delhi, Aug 21 — Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has been granted Z-category security by the Centre, a day after she was physically attacked during a weekly public hearing at her official residence. Officials said the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has been assigned to her security detail.

The accused, identified as Rajesh Khimji, was produced before a magistrate in Dwarka late Wednesday night and remanded in police custody for five days.

The incident took place Wednesday morning when Khimji, posing as a complainant, handed some papers to the chief minister and then suddenly began shouting. Witnesses said he grabbed Gupta by her hand and hair and pushed her. Some claimed he also slapped her, though Delhi BJP state president Virendra Sachdeva denied that the CM was slapped.

The accused was immediately overpowered by security personnel and others present at the public hearing. Eyewitnesses said he was beaten by the crowd before being taken into custody.

The attack sparked alarm in the Delhi Police over a serious breach of security. Officials confirmed that an internal review has been launched into the lapse.

Following his court appearance, Khimji was sent to police remand for interrogation. Investigators are probing his motive and background.
