Chandigarh, Oct 3: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday announced former MLA Harmeet Singh Sandhu as the Aam Aadmi Party’s candidate for the upcoming Tarn Taran Assembly bypoll. The seat became vacant following the death of AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal in June.

Addressing a gathering in Tarn Taran, Mann said, “He [Sandhu] is your choice,” confirming Sandhu as the party’s nominee. The Election Commission has yet to announce the bypoll date.

Mann was in Tarn Taran to inaugurate a project for the construction of rural link roads when he made the announcement.

Sandhu, a three-time MLA from Tarn Taran, was first elected as an independent candidate in 2002. He later won the seat in 2007 and 2012 on a Shiromani Akali Dal ticket. He contested in 2017 and 2022 but lost both elections. Sandhu joined the Aam Aadmi Party in July.

Party leaders said Sandhu’s nomination reflects AAP’s confidence in his experience and connection with the constituency.
