New Delhi, Dec 17: India on Wednesday summoned Bangladesh High Commissioner Riaz Hamidullah and conveyed strong concerns over the security of its diplomatic mission in Dhaka following announcements by extremist elements about creating a security situation around the Indian mission.

In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said the envoy was informed about New Delhi’s concerns over the “deteriorating security environment” in Bangladesh, with specific reference to threats directed at the Indian Mission.

“His attention was drawn, in particular, to the activities of some extremist elements who have announced plans to create a security situation around the Indian Mission in Dhaka,” the MEA said.

The ministry said India expects the interim government in Bangladesh to uphold its diplomatic obligations and ensure the safety of all foreign missions and posts.

“We expect the interim government to ensure the safety of Missions and Posts in Bangladesh in keeping with its diplomatic obligations,” the statement said.

The MEA also rejected what it described as a false narrative being circulated by extremist groups in connection with recent developments in Bangladesh.

“India completely rejects the false narrative sought to be created by extremist elements regarding certain recent events in Bangladesh,” it said, without detailing the incidents.

The ministry said it was “unfortunate” that the interim government had not carried out a thorough investigation into the incidents or shared “meaningful evidence” with India.

Reiterating New Delhi’s broader position, the MEA said India supports peace and stability in Bangladesh. “India has close and friendly relations with the people of Bangladesh rooted in the liberation struggle,” it said, adding that the relationship has been strengthened through development cooperation and people-to-people ties.

India, the MEA said, has consistently called for “free, fair, inclusive and credible elections” in Bangladesh, conducted in a peaceful environment.
