Phagwara, Dec 31: Police in Phagwara registered 873 criminal cases and issued 9,557 traffic challans in 2025 as part of intensified enforcement against drug trafficking, traffic violations and other offences, officials said.

According to official data released by the police, the year saw sustained checking drives, naka operations and intelligence-based investigations across the sub-division. Authorities said these measures were aimed at curbing narcotics circulation, improving road discipline and targeting habitual offenders.

“The focus remained on drugs and traffic management, which continue to be major concerns in the area,” a senior police official said.

The campaign against narcotics resulted in the arrest of 338 drug traffickers during the year. Police recovered a wide range of substances, including heroin, opium, poppy husk, ganja, charas, pharmaceutical drugs and illicit liquor. Several cases were registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

Investigations, officials said, pointed to organised supply chains operating across district and state boundaries. “Many of the cases revealed networks rather than isolated peddlers,” the officer said.

Apart from narcotics, police also took action against gambling, excise violations and other criminal activities. Raids and checkpoints led to the seizure of cash, vehicles and other property valued at several lakhs of rupees.

Special operations were conducted against repeat offenders, resulting in multiple long-pending arrests, police said. Officers added that increased traffic density and changing crime patterns posed challenges throughout the year.

“Despite these pressures, regular enforcement and public cooperation helped us maintain law and order,” the official said.
