Chandigarh, Jan 16: Suspended Deputy General Inspector (DIG) Harcharan Singh Bhullar has approached the CBI Court in Chandigarh to challenge the freezing of 10 bank accounts belonging to his father and daughter. The court has subsequently issued a notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation, seeking a formal response by February 6.
Bhullar contended that the central agency acted without judicial oversight during its probe into a “trap case.” He described the move as both arbitrary and illegal, noting that the freezing of these specific assets occurred without the agency obtaining prior permission from the court.
The legal challenge centers on the claim that the accounts are unrelated to the ongoing criminal proceedings. “The CBI presented the challan in the case on December 3, 2025, against Bhullar and co-accused Krishanu Sharda, yet these bank accounts were not part of that challan,” defense counsel SPS Bhullar stated during the proceedings.
The defense further argued that the frozen funds belong to individuals with independent financial standing. Bhullar’s father is an 80-year-old Army veteran and former Punjab DGP who maintains his accounts through pension and agricultural income.
“There is nothing on record to show under which legal provision the accounts were frozen,” the counsel mentioned, adding that the money has no connection to the alleged offense.
