Jhalda, West Bengal, 12 October, 2024: The body of Purnima Kandu, Congress councillor from Ward 12 of Jhalda Municipality in Purulia district, was found late Friday night at her residence.

Kandu, the widow of late Congress councillor Tapan Kandu, was found unconscious by her family after they returned home from Durga Puja festivities. She was declared dead at Jhalda block health centre.

Kandu’s family, who claimed she was in good health earlier that day, expressed concerns over the circumstances of her death. “We suspect something unnatural happened. However, the cause will only be confirmed after the post-mortem report,” said Nepal Mahato, Congress’s Purulia district president.

Purnima Kandu had been elected to her late husband’s seat after Tapan Kandu was shot dead by unknown assailants in March 2022.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently handling the investigation into his murder, with seven people, including Tapan’s nephew, arrested.
