New Delhi, March 27: Aam Aadmi Party MP Malwinder Singh Kang on Friday urged the Lok Sabha to enact a law making medical and dope tests compulsory for men prior to marriage. During the Zero Hour, the Punjab representative stated that such a mandate would address the rising instances of domestic violence and divorce in India. Kang affirmed that while women face intense scrutiny during matrimonial negotiations, men are often exempt from similar verification processes.
The MP asserted that the current system lacks a balanced approach to vetting. He maintained that whenever a marriage is solemnized, the woman is questioned extensively regarding her professional skills and background, yet the groom’s health and possible addictions are rarely confirmed. Kang declared that requiring a medical certificate and a clean dope test for men would prevent families from hiding serious diseases or substance abuse issues before a marriage certificate is issued.
“We must make it incumbent upon boys to furnish their medical certificates and dope test results,” Kang stated during his address to the House. He affirmed that the Union Government should provide clear directions to all states to adopt this framework. The lawmaker maintained that ensuring the health and sobriety of the groom is a necessary step toward protecting the interests of women and reducing the likelihood of marital discord.
The proposal received significant attention in the House as Kang noted that people frequently conceal chronic ailments during the matchmaking process. He asserted that a formal legal requirement would bring much-needed transparency to the institution of marriage. The MP maintained that the Centre holds the responsibility to lead this legislative change to ensure a safer environment for brides across the country.
