Hemkund Sahib, Uttarakhand, April 5: The Indian Army and volunteers from the Gurudwara Sri Hemkund Sahib Management Trust have completed a joint reconnaissance of the trek route from Govindghat to the Himalayan shrine.
During the survey conducted Sunday, teams observed significant snow accumulation, with depths reaching five to six feet at Sri Hemkund Sahib and substantial deposits at the Atlakoti Glacier Point.
Officials stated that despite the heavy buildup, recent snowfall from the past ten days is expected to recede quickly if sunny conditions persist.
An Army contingent is scheduled to begin snow clearance operations after April 15 to ensure the path is safe for the thousands of devotees expected this season.
“All necessary preparations are currently underway to ensure that the pilgrimage is smooth, safe, and free of any disruptions,” representatives from the Management Trust and the Indian Army affirmed in a joint statement.

The pilgrimage is officially slated to commence on May 23, 2026. The first batch of pilgrims is scheduled to depart from Rishikesh on May 20.
Located amidst snow-capped peaks and a high-altitude lake, the site remains one of the most sacred destinations in the Sikh faith.
Authorities affirmed that enhanced coordination between military personnel and shrine volunteers will prioritize the comfort and convenience of the pilgrims.
The clearing of the trek route remains the primary focus of the pre-season preparations to allow for a timely opening of the portals.
