Mumbai, April 12: The Indian music industry is in mourning following the death of legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, who passed away Sunday at a Mumbai hospital. The 92-year-old artist had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital on Saturday evening after experiencing a chest infection and extreme exhaustion, which later escalated into cardiac and respiratory complications.

Medical professionals stated that despite intensive efforts, the veteran singer suffered a rapid deterioration in her condition. Dr. Pratit Samdani confirmed the cause of death, stating that she passed away due to multi-organ failure. Her son, Anand Bhosle, affirmed that the mortal remains have been brought to the family’s residence in Lower Parel, with final rites scheduled for Monday afternoon at Shivaji Park.

Bhosle’s career, which began at the age of 10 in 1943, spanned over eight decades and included a world record for the most studio recordings. She was celebrated for her immense versatility, moving effortlessly from the soulful ghazals of “Umrao Jaan” to the high-energy cabaret tracks of the 1970s. Her granddaughter, Zanai Bhosle, had earlier requested privacy as the family navigated the singer’s final hours in the intensive care unit.

Tributes from across the globe have begun pouring in for the Padma Vibhushan recipient. Fellow artists and public figures noted that her passing marks the end of an era in Indian playback singing. Authorities stated that she is survived by her son and several grandchildren. Throughout her life, she remained a constant presence in cinema, lending her voice to generations of actors ranging from Madhubala to modern-day stars.
