Chandigarh, April 23: The Punjab Government has introduced a significant policy shift for the 2026-2027 academic session, offering a 15 percent discount on textbooks for approximately 10 lakh students. Education Minister Harjot Bains stated that this measure applies to all students from Class 1 to 12 enrolled in private, aided, and affiliated schools under the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB).

Under the new arrangement, the board will bypass traditional retail intermediaries to supply books directly to students. Minister Bains maintained that this initiative is designed to dismantle the long-standing monopoly held by private bookshops and agencies. He affirmed that the 15 percent margin previously reserved for shopkeepers will now be passed directly to the families of students to make education more affordable and transparent.

To facilitate this transition, the PSEB has developed a dedicated e-commerce portal and mobile application. Board Chairman Dr. Amarpal noted that the digital platform allows for a streamlined ordering process, where every student receives a unique login ID. Schools will be responsible for uploading subject lists and class requirements, though parents also have the option to order directly through the portal.

The administration has established strict oversight mechanisms to prevent overcharging. Education officials affirmed that schools must submit a written affidavit promising not to charge a single rupee beyond the discounted billing price. The board’s regional offices have already begun preparing book bundles to ensure timely delivery before the start of the new term.
