Srinagar, May 5: Two individuals were confirmed dead on Tuesday after their vehicle skidded off the Mughal Road and plunged into a deep nallah near Chhattapani. The recovery follows an intensive search operation launched by District Police Poonch to locate four travelers who were reported missing on Monday during a period of inclement weather and heavy snowfall.
Authorities stated that the vehicle was finally traced within the fast-flowing stream earlier today. While two bodies were retrieved from the site, the status of the remaining two passengers remains unknown. “Efforts are underway to trace the remaining two missing persons,” an official affirmed, adding that specialized rescue teams are continuing to scour the rugged terrain and the watercourse.
The accident is believed to have been triggered by slippery road conditions caused by a sudden spell of snowfall at higher altitudes. The identity of the deceased is currently being ascertained by the police. “Two bodies were recovered from the spot,” an official stated, maintaining that the search would continue until all individuals are accounted for.
The Mughal Road, which serves as a critical link between the Poonch-Rajouri districts and the Kashmir valley, often presents hazardous driving conditions during unseasonal snowfall. Officials noted that the investigation into the exact cause of the mishap is in progress, while rescue personnel remain stationed at the site near Chhattapani to coordinate the ongoing search.
