ROPAR, June 10 — Concern spread among residents of villages near the Bhanupali area on Tuesday after a section of the Anandpur Sahib Hydel Canal overflowed near the Bhanupali siphon, prompting an inspection by officials of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL).
According to local sources, residents first noticed water emerging from the canal near the siphon area and immediately informed authorities. Following the alert, officials from PSPCL’s civil wing reached the site to examine the situation and begin remedial measures.
Executive Engineer Avinash Sharma of PSPCL’s civil wing confirmed that officials were investigating the incident.
“We are reaching the spot and after conducting an investigation, we will find out the reason for the overflow,” Sharma said.
Preliminary information suggests that garbage accumulation may have disrupted the normal flow of water through the canal system. Sources familiar with the matter said plastic waste and other discarded materials carried by the water could have collected near the siphon section, creating an obstruction that led to the overflow.
Officials associated with the canal’s maintenance said the issue reflects a broader challenge faced by the corporation. Speaking on condition of anonymity, they said large quantities of waste are routinely removed from the canal network, yet illegal dumping continues to affect operations.
“The increasing amount of garbage entering the canal has become a major problem, and it is likely that the accumulation of garbage near the siphon caused the flow of water to stop and it started leaking out,” a PSPCL official said.
The Anandpur Sahib Hydel Canal forms part of the infrastructure linked to hydel power projects maintained by PSPCL. Officials said further details would be available after a complete inspection of the affected section.
Residents expressed concern over the incident and called for stricter measures to prevent waste from being dumped into the canal. Authorities are expected to determine the exact cause once the investigation is completed.
