Chandigarh, July 24: An accused in the 2023 Ajnala police station clash was taken into custody by the Uttar Pradesh Police while allegedly attempting to enter India illegally from Nepal, alongside a US national of Punjab origin. The key activist, Vikramjit Singh, had been evading arrest for over two years, staying in multiple cities including Mumbai, Rajasthan, Delhi, and Udhampur before moving to Kathmandu a year ago.
“Both individuals were detained for entering the country without valid documents,” declared Uttar Pradesh Superintendent of Police Vishwajeet Srivastava, adding that the US citizen was intercepted during routine checking without a visa.
Police officials stated that an active arrest warrant was pending against Vikramjit, who was among the supporters accompanying Amritpal Singh during the February 2023 protest march in Ajnala. A team from Amritsar Rural Police subsequently reached Uttar Pradesh to take custody of the suspect after completing the necessary legal formalities. Authorities maintained that Vikramjit was travelling using a fake Aadhaar card, leading to additional registration of cases under the Foreigners Act and other relevant statutory laws.
