Mumbai, August 7 — Security agencies across Maharashtra’s capital have been placed on heightened vigilance after an electronic threat warning of series explosions prior to Independence Day was sent to Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde’s official email address on Friday morning.
The communication outlined specific targets across the metropolis, including the Mayor’s office, the Bombay Stock Exchange, local schools, and the Mumbai Metro system. The email additionally contained pro-Khalistan messaging, advised parents to keep children away from educational institutions, and urged commuters to avoid public mass transit networks.
Mumbai Police, in coordination with the Cyber Crime Cell, immediately initiated a technical investigation to trace the originating IP address and identify the individuals involved. Authorities confirmed that this incident marks the third instance where the Mayor’s office has been targeted with similar electronic threats.
“Investigation is underway, and authorities are working to ascertain whether the email is linked to the earlier threats received by the Mayor’s office or forms part of a separate attempt to create panic in the city,” an investigating official stated.
Law enforcement agencies have stepped up physical surveillance and protective measures across high-footfall public places, transit hubs, and key administrative installations to maintain order leading up to national holiday celebrations.
