Chandigarh, August 23: A 28-year-old delivery worker from Punjab lost his life after being shot by an unidentified assailant during an apparent robbery attempt in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. The victim, identified as Gurdeep Singh, hailed from Jabowal village in Kapurthala district and had been working in the United States while residing on a valid work permit.
Family members in Punjab shared that the young worker had undertaken significant financial debt to travel abroad in 2017, working tirelessly to support his household prior to the fatal incident. Relatives noted that Gurdeep had not been able to return home to visit his family for nine years as he focused on building a secure future.
The tragedy has sparked sharp reactions among diaspora organizations, with the North American Punjabi Association raising strong concerns over recurring violence targeting immigrant workers. Representatives maintained that the incident must not be viewed in isolation, declaring that the community deserves equal protection and security while urging law enforcement to conduct a thorough investigation to establish the exact motives behind the crime.
