Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, September 1: The second phase of the Punjab government’s ‘Mission Clean Punjab’ campaign was launched in Mohali on Monday with an intensive cleanliness drive by the Municipal Corporation, Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar.
Constituency MLA Kulwant Singh inaugurated the campaign at Sector 74-A (Bariali) on Airport Road in the presence of Mohali Mayor Sarabjit Singh Samana and Municipal Corporation Commissioner Sandeep Singh Garha.
Speaking on the occasion, Kulwant Singh said the Punjab government had launched the second phase of the cleanliness mission across the state, including Mohali. He said an intensive, war-footing cleanliness campaign would be undertaken for eight days initially, following which efforts would continue on a regular basis to maintain the cleanliness and beauty of the city.
The MLA stressed that public participation would be crucial to the success of the campaign. He appealed to Mohali residents to actively support the Municipal Corporation and help transform ‘Mission Clean Punjab’ into a people’s movement.
He warned that strict action would be taken against people found littering public places. CCTV cameras were being used to identify violators and challans would be issued for violations, while legal action could also be initiated wherever necessary, he said.
Kulwant Singh said some people were bringing garbage from their homes and other places and dumping it at open sites and public places, adversely affecting the city’s appearance. He urged residents to cooperate with the civic authorities in identifying such offenders.
He also appealed to citizens to segregate wet and dry waste and hand it over according to the Municipal Corporation’s waste disposal arrangements. Around 20 to 25 locations have been identified in the area for special cleanliness operations, he added.
Mayor Sarabjit Singh Samana said maintaining the cleanliness and beauty of Mohali remained the Municipal Corporation’s top priority. He said Sector 74-A, Bariali, was selected for the launch as Airport Road serves as an important entry and exit point to the city.
The Mayor said the Municipal Corporation had already been conducting cleanliness drives across Mohali for the past several months. Under the second phase of the state-wide campaign, special attention was now being given to major entry points and other identified locations to remove garbage dumps and further strengthen Mohali’s image as a clean city.
Senior Deputy Mayor Rajinder Prasad Sharma, Deputy Mayor Harpal Singh Channa, councillors Parminder Kaur Bariali, Gurpreet Singh Bariali, Jaspal Singh Mataur, Akwinder Singh Gosal, Amarjit Singh Sidhu, Naresh Batta and Harmesh Singh Kumbara, besides other officials and dignitaries, were present.
