Mohali: Farmers protesting near the Chandigarh-Mohali border ended their week-long agitation near Jagatpura village following positive assurances from the Punjab government regarding their long-standing requirements.
Representatives of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) confirmed the decision after receiving written confirmation from the state administration. The government maintained that a special session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha will be convened within a month to address critical issues concerning farming and state river waters.
During this upcoming assembly session, the state intends to seek a reconsideration of existing water agreements and discuss resolutions regarding river water sharing provisions under the Punjab Reorganisation Act. The assembly will also consider resolutions concerning the Dam Safety Act and the Seed Bill, 2025.
The consensus was reached following detailed discussions between Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian and senior farmer representatives, including Balbir Singh Rajewal, Buta Singh Burjgill, Harinder Singh Lakhowal, Prem Singh Bhangu, and Raminder Patiala.
Addressing financial concerns, the administration affirmed plans to form a specialized committee comprising representatives from cooperative banks and key stakeholders to structure a one-time settlement scheme for outstanding agricultural loans. This committee will consult with various political entities before finalizing its recommendations.
Regarding the sugar sector, the state declared that pending payments owed by private sugar mills will be settled within a clear timeframe, alongside introducing a “One Window, One Payment” mechanism for cooperative sugar mills to ensure smoother financial operations for cultivators.
