New York, 31st October 2024: To promote cultural inclusivity, New York City has announced that schools will observe a holiday on November 1 to mark Diwali, allowing over 1.1 million students to join in the Festival of Lights celebrations.

“This year, Diwali is historic. For the first time in New York City’s history, schools will close on Friday, November 1, for Diwali,” shared Dilip Chauhan, Deputy Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office for International Affairs. The holiday follows last year’s legislation signed by Governor Kathy Hochul, which recognized Diwali as an official school holiday citywide.

Chauhan emphasized the profound impact of the decision on the Indian diaspora, noting it brings families, friends, and neighbors together in celebration while reflecting the diverse, inclusive spirit that defines New York. “We faced challenges, particularly in meeting instructional day requirements. Thoughtful adjustments were made to honor all communities,” he added.

The city’s celebrations extended to its skyline, with the iconic World Trade Center lighting up in radiant colors for Diwali.

The observance also resonated nationally, as President Biden hosted a Diwali celebration at the White House earlier this week, attended by over 600 Indian American leaders, including members of Congress, senior officials, and top business executives.
