CHANDIGARH, SEPT 29: A total of 808 MBBS and BDS seats remain vacant across medical and dental institutes in Punjab following the conclusion of the second round of counselling, according to the revised seat matrices released by Baba Farid University of Health Sciences. The detailed breakdown reveals that non-resident Indian quota seats comprise a major portion of these unfilled positions, accounting for 389 of the overall vacant seats in both streams.
In the MBBS section, 307 seats are currently available across government and private institutions, representing approximately 17 per cent of the total 1,800 seats in the state. Five government medical colleges account for 98 vacancies, while seven private colleges have 209 vacant seats. The NRI category dominates the MBBS figures with 175 vacant seats, which is nearly 57 per cent of the stream’s total. Guru Gobind Singh Medical College in Faridkot recorded 51 vacant seats, including 38 under the NRI quota, while Government Medical College in Amritsar reported 16, Government Medical College in Patiala listed 20, and Dr BR Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences in Mohali showed 11. Meanwhile, ESIC Medical College in Ludhiana recorded full occupancy. In the private sector, Adesh Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in Bathinda listed 46 vacancies, Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in Amritsar reported 43, and Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences in Jalandhar showed 35.
The dental education sector displays a similar trend, with the BDS matrix showing 501 vacant seats across 17 institutions. Out of these, 214 belong to the NRI quota. RIMT Dental College in Mandi Gobindgarh recorded 46 vacancies, followed by Sri Sukhmani Dental College in Dera Bassi with 45, Desh Bhagat Dental College in Mandi Gobindgarh with 43, and both Guru Nanak Dev Dental College in Sunam and Genesis Institute of Dental Sciences in Ferozepur with 42 each. Dasmesh Institute of Research and Dental Sciences in Faridkot reported 25 vacancies, including 14 under the NRI category. Several private dental institutions also maintain multiple unfilled seats under the Scheduled Caste management quota. The university’s willingness list for the upcoming third round currently includes 1,629 applicants.
