NEW DELHI, OCT 10: Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk issued a stern warning on Saturday, declaring that he will initiate an indefinite fast or a foot march if authorities fail to release all individuals detained during capital-wide demonstrations by Sunday.
In a video broadcast via social media, Wangchuk condemned the sweeping security actions targeting political figures and civil rights advocates as an “undeclared emergency”, expressing profound shock over the large-scale preventive detentions enacted to block protests against the Chief Election Commissioner.
The ultimatum follows a massive security crackdown in New Delhi that resulted in the detention of thousands of participants, including high-profile political figures such as West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal.
Police agencies maintained tight cordons around key civic zones after denying formal permissions for the planned gathering at Jantar Mantar. In response to the detentions, opposition leaders released statements vowing continued resistance against administrative measures, urging citizens to challenge ongoing electoral roll revisions and demand institutional accountability.
