NEW DELHI / CHANDIGARH — The Aam Aadmi Party has expressed strong disapproval regarding an incident involving the Delhi Police entering the premises of Gurdwara Sri Bangla Sahib to detain youth protesting against alleged vote irregularities. Leaders from the party noted that police personnel reportedly entered the holy site wearing shoes, bareheaded, and carrying batons, describing the actions as an affront to Sikh religious sentiments and a breach of the traditional sanctity observed at Guru Ghar. The party maintained that sacred shrines have historically provided refuge to all individuals and urged that religious traditions be treated with the utmost reverence.
In statements addressing the matter, Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan affirmed that entering the holy shrine under such circumstances was inappropriate for any law enforcement agency. Senior AAP leader and Punjab Cabinet Minister Harpal Singh Cheema stated that actions affecting the sanctity of religious sites evoke painful historical memories for the community, asserting that political conduct should avoid creating deep emotional wounds among citizens.
Media In-charge Baltej Pannu affirmed that the incident required careful consideration and expressed concern over the silence maintained by various quarters following the event. Further elaborating on the matter, Cabinet Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur maintained that displaying police force within a place of worship disregards long-standing Sikh traditions.
Addressing the broader context of the incident, AAP Delhi MLA Jarnail Singh maintained that the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee should look into why such an action was permitted within the sacred premises. Concurrently, AAP Delhi Unit President Saurabh Bharadwaj shared footage related to the treatment of a protester during the police action, calling for accountability and respectful handling of demonstrators by law enforcement authorities.
