NEW DELHI, OCT 13: The Swadeshi Jagran Manch, an economic affiliate of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, on Tuesday called for a prohibition on the entry of Elon Musk’s satellite communications firm Starlink into India. Representatives of the organization cited significant national security risks regarding data transmission protocols and regulatory compliance. Senior leaders asserted that space-based laser communications could potentially bypass domestic ground gateways, creating challenges for security oversight during emergency situations.
National co-convener Ashwani Mahajan stated that the organization strongly condemns recent public remarks made by SpaceX leadership regarding Indian business and regulatory processes. Officials maintained that telecom service providers operating within the country must fully comply with government directives, including the ability to restrict services in sensitive areas during law and order challenges. Security agencies affirmed that indigenous communication networks currently satisfy these stringent administrative requirements while maintaining low cost structures.
The economic body drew parallels to earlier decisions concerning telecommunications infrastructure, noting similar interventions during the domestic rollout of 5G networks. SJM officials maintained that prioritizing national security and indigenous technical frameworks remains essential to protect national interests. Regulatory bodies affirmed that Starlink’s licensing application remains under review while authorities evaluate technical capabilities and security assurances provided by foreign applicants.
