New Delhi, October 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate a series of major infrastructure and development projects in the Union Territory of Ladakh through video conferencing on October 15, with the upgraded Leh airport, strategically important roads and bridges among the key works to be dedicated to the public.
The virtual inauguration ceremony is scheduled to begin at 11:00 AM from New Delhi. Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena and other senior officials and public representatives are expected to participate in the main function from Leh.
According to officials, the initiative is aimed at strengthening transportation infrastructure, improving connectivity to remote and border areas, and supporting the region’s economic growth, tourism potential and strategic requirements.
EXPANDED LEH AIRPORT TO BOOST AIR CONNECTIVITY
The modernised terminal at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh is among the major projects scheduled for inauguration. The upgraded facility is expected to significantly enhance passenger-handling capacity and improve air connectivity to the high-altitude Union Territory.
Once fully operational, the expanded airport is expected to accommodate up to 54 flights daily, compared with its existing capacity of around 18 flights, thereby providing greater scope for passenger movement and tourism-related travel.
The airport modernisation project is also expected to improve travel facilities for residents, visitors and other passengers, while strengthening Ladakh’s connectivity with other parts of the country.
ROADS AND BRIDGES TO STRENGTHEN CONNECTIVITY
Several other infrastructure projects, including important roads and bridges constructed largely by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), are also scheduled to be inaugurated.
These projects are expected to improve access to remote settlements, facilitate civilian movement and strengthen logistical connectivity for defence personnel deployed in strategically sensitive areas.
Improved road infrastructure is also expected to support tourism, local trade and the transportation of essential supplies, particularly in areas where geographical challenges and harsh weather conditions often affect movement.
Officials indicated that additional development initiatives may also be launched as part of the programme.
INAUGURATION FUNCTIONS ACROSS SEVEN DISTRICTS
Separate programmes are planned across all seven districts of Ladakh to mark the inauguration of the development projects.
Deputy Commissioners, Senior Superintendents of Police, representatives of socio-religious organisations and other prominent personalities are expected to participate in the district-level functions.
The Prime Minister will address the gathering after inaugurating the projects virtually.
SENIOR LEADERS AND OFFICIALS EXPECTED TO ATTEND
Among those expected to join the main ceremony in Leh are Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, Chief Secretary Ashish Kundra, Ladakh Lok Sabha MP Mohammad Hanifa Jan, Chairman of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil, Dr Mohammad Jaffer Akhoon, and other senior officials and public representatives.
The projects form part of the broader push to improve infrastructure and public facilities in Ladakh, where reliable connectivity remains essential for residents, tourism, administration and national security.
DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES AND LADAKH’S PENDING ISSUES
The inauguration programme will coincide with a scheduled meeting in Leh between the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and representatives of the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA).
The proposed discussions are expected to address key demands raised by Ladakh’s representative groups, including the proposed establishment of a Union Territory-level elected body with legislative, financial and executive powers, along with issues concerning the implementation of relevant provisions of Article 371.
The meeting is expected to take place after the Prime Minister’s inauguration programme.
The infrastructure announcements and the scheduled political dialogue are expected to place development, connectivity and the long-pending demands of Ladakh at the centre of attention on October 15.
