Violence Erupts in Abohar Amid Punjab Municipal Elections

Abohar, December 21, 2024: Tensions escalated outside a municipal corporation booth in Abohar today, where police had to resort to lathi-charging a group of individuals attempting to force their way into the polling station.

The crowd ignored police orders to stop, prompting security forces to take action. This incident comes as voting is underway in five municipal corporations across Punjab, including Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Amritsar, Patiala, and Phagwara.

The elections, which began at 7 am, are set to conclude today with results to be declared later in the day.

As of 1 pm, voter turnout across the five cities has reached 41 percent. In Abohar, elections are also being held for Ward 22, where additional police personnel have been deployed to maintain order.

Local leaders from BJP, Akali Dal, and Congress have expressed confidence in the security measures, while DSP Sukhwinder Singh Brar assured that the elections are proceeding peacefully.
