Chandigarh, December 21, 2024: Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee and Ludhiana MP, urged Vice President and Panjab University Chancellor Jagdeep Dhankhar on Friday to expedite the delayed senate elections at Panjab University, emphasizing their significance for the institution’s governance and democratic legacy.

In a meeting with Dhankhar ahead of his scheduled visit to the university on Saturday, Warring voiced concerns over the prolonged delay. “Panjab University has long been a beacon of democratic governance in higher education, with its elected senate serving as a unique model of inclusivity and impartiality,” Warring said.

He warned that the delay not only undermines the university’s democratic tradition but also impacts its stakeholders directly.

The Ludhiana MP accentuated the critical role of the senate in decision-making and institutional growth, stating that its absence creates a leadership vacuum. “This delay leaves key issues unresolved, affecting students, faculty, and the university’s future direction. It’s essential to respect and restore the democratic rights of the university community without further delay,” he added.

Warring framed the issue as a broader challenge to democracy in educational governance. “This isn’t just about procedural efficiency but about protecting Panjab University’s democratic identity,” he stated.

He called for swift action, stressing that Panjab University’s governance model serves as a precedent for other institutions nationwide.

“By addressing this delay, we reaffirm the importance of democracy in education and demonstrate our commitment to preserving it,” Warring said, urging the Vice President to ensure immediate steps are taken to resume the electoral process.
