Gharuan, 22 December 2024: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) claimed a decisive victory in the inaugural Gharuan Nagar Panchayat elections, securing 10 out of 11 wards and gaining control of the civic body.

An independent candidate won in the remaining ward.

The peaceful election, conducted under heavy police presence, saw 28 candidates in the fray, with AAP and Congress each fielding 11, while six contested as independents. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chose not to participate.

Polling ran from 7 am to 4 pm, and AAP’s strong performance marked a successful debut for the party in Gharuan.

In addition to the Gharuan elections, by-elections were held in three municipal corporation wards: Ward 16 in Kharar, Ward 16 in Nayagaon, and Ward 6 in Banur. In Kharar, AAP candidate Anju Chander triumphed, while Congress’s Neelam Rani won in Banur. In Nayagaon, the BJP’s Vishal claimed victory in the bypoll.

Viraj S. Tidke, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General), noted the historical significance of the elections, underlining the smooth conduct of both the polling and counting processes.
