Jalandhar, Feb 6: Unidentified gunmen killed AAP leader Lucky Oberoi in a targeted shooting outside a Model Town gurdwara on Friday morning. The Jalandhar-based financier was attacked while seated in his SUV, marking a sudden act of violence in the otherwise quiet posh locality.

The incident occurred while two separate events, including a wedding ceremony, were being held on the gurdwara grounds. The sound of gunfire was initially mistaken for celebrations, delaying the immediate response from bystanders. Oberoi, a frequent visitor to the shrine, was targeted just as he finished his daily religious observations.

“There were two programmes being organised in the gurdwara premises at that time, including an Anand Karaj ceremony. When the gunshots were fired, everyone inside the gurdwara initially thought they were fireworks by the wedding party,” a sewadar at the scene said. He further mentioned that it took several minutes for the witnesses to realize a shooting had occurred.

Police officials have recovered evidence from the site and are looking into the professional and personal background of the deceased. Investigators noted that Oberoi was struck by four bullets, specifically targeting his head and chest. The use of a two-wheeler for a quick getaway has led police to scan several kilometers of surveillance data in the surrounding blocks.

Party officials expressed their shock over the loss of a dedicated member whose family remained active in local governance efforts. Rajwinder Thiara, the halqa incharge for Jalandhar Cantt, said that the attackers likely tracked the leader’s consistent morning habits. “It was Oberoi’s daily routine to visit the gurdwara and the assailants appeared to be aware of his movements,” Thiara said.
