Ludhiana, Dec 14: An Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) worker was allegedly attacked by workers of an Independent candidate in Dakha late Saturday night, prompting police to register a case for attempt to murder and other offences.

According to police, the incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. following a quarrel between Varinder Singh, son of an AAP candidate, and Jatinder Singh, a worker of an Independent candidate contesting the local bodies polls.

“An altercation took place between the two sides, following which Varinder Singh was assaulted,” said DSP Varinder Khosa.

Police said Varinder was allegedly attacked by Jatinder Singh along with Pawanpreet, Aakash, Kiran and four unidentified men.

Varinder alleged that the accused were distributing liquor and cash to influence voters in the area. “When I objected and tried to stop them, they attacked me,” he told police.

Varinder’s mother is contesting the Block Samiti Zone election.

DSP Khosa said a case under sections related to attempt to murder and other provisions of law has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
