Chandigarh, 16 November 2024: The Afghanistan women’s cricket team is set to make a comeback, following a nearly three-year hiatus. After the Taliban’s rise to power in Afghanistan, the team faced a ban, forcing players to seek refuge in Australia.

The refugee team will face the Cricket Without Borders XI in a T20 match in Melbourne on January 30, 2025. This will mark their first match since the Taliban takeover.

Earlier this year, 17 Afghan women cricketers wrote to the International Cricket Council (ICC) seeking assistance to form a refugee team. They expressed their desire to showcase their skills and highlight the struggles faced by women in Afghanistan. Now, after 37 months, the Afghan women’s team is ready to return to international play.
