CHANDIGARH, Jan 17 — A high-level delegation of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) met with Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on Friday alleging a grave threat to the life of jailed leader Bikram Singh Majithia, claiming that despite central intelligence warnings regarding terror outfit Babbar Khalsa International, the state government has failed to provide adequate security for the leader at Nabha jail.

The delegation, which included Ganieve Kaur Majithia and senior leaders Balwinder Singh Bhunder and Daljit Singh Cheema, alleged that privacy violations are being used as a tool of harassment.

They noted that authorities attempted to install CCTV cameras facing the washroom and toilet area of Majithia’s cell, describing the move as an affront to religious sentiments and personal dignity.

“Why should police officers install a camera facing the washroom in a jail cell?” the party asked in its formal representation to the Governor.

The leaders mentioned that two DIG-rank officers had personally informed Majithia of the threat to his life on Jan. 1.

However, SAD leaders compared the current situation to the events leading up to the killing of singer Sidhu Moosewala, noting that sensitive intelligence inputs were leaked to the media while official briefings for Majithia’s counsel were withheld.

The party also directly said that microphones and cameras were used to monitor a private meeting between Majithia and his wife on Jan. 15.

The representation urged the Governor to intervene immediately to ensure the safety of the former minister, who has been in custody since last June.
