Amritsar, March 6: The annual “kar sewa” for cleaning the gold-plated exterior and domes of Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib commenced on Friday morning. Following a traditional “ardaas” ceremony, a team of volunteers began the delicate task of maintaining the sanctum sanctorum using natural, herbal materials.
The cleaning process involves a specialized organic concoction of water, lemon juice, and boiled “reetha” (soapnut). This traditional method is preferred to preserve the integrity and luster of the gold without the use of harsh chemicals. SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami affirmed that the Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha from Birmingham has once again been entrusted with this significant responsibility.
Dhami stated that the gold surfaces are washed annually by these dedicated volunteers to ensure the shrine maintains its pristine appearance. In addition to the main sanctum, the “sewa” will extend to the gold plates covering the domes of the Akal Takht, Gurdwara Baba Atal Rai, and the Ghanta Ghar Deori.
Bhai Mohinder Singh, head of the Nishkam Sewak Jatha, declared that the volunteers have traveled specifically for this service, which is expected to last between 10 to 12 days. He asserted that the Jatha considers it a divine blessing to perform this work every year with the cooperation of the SGPC.
The commencement ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Golden Temple Additional Head Granthi Giani Amarjit Singh. Dhami maintained his gratitude toward the volunteers, expressing his hope that they would continue their selfless service to the “Guru Ghar” in the years to come.
