Hisar, Sept 22: Outraged by three recent instances of inter-village unions, a social panchayat held in Arya Nagar village of Hisar district resolved to enforce a complete social boycott on couples who marry within the same village and those who support them. Attended by prominent residents, the village sarpanch, and local leaders, the gathering declared that any couple marrying in violation of prevailing social customs will be forbidden from residing in the village.
Speakers at the meeting characterized such unions as a growing concern that conflicts directly with age-old traditions. Hanuman Verma, a local resident and political figure present at the assembly, affirmed that the decision was taken unanimously to protect long-standing cultural norms. He declared that villagers view all unmarried women in the community as daughters and sisters, making such unions socially unacceptable. Verma maintained that the gathering was requested by the family of a woman who recently wed a youth from the same village, prompting community members to take collective preventive action.
The local administration and police have kept a watchful eye on the situation to maintain peace. Village sarpanch Rattan Singh asserted that the decision reflected the unified stance of the community, noting that the latest marriage triggered significant reactions despite the couple briefly seeking protection at a government-run safe house. Addressing safety concerns, Hisar SP Siddhant Jain stated that the couple faces no active threat, as the bride’s family assured law enforcement officers of their non-interference. While some local youth expressed opposition on social media platforms by calling the restriction an outdated practice, community elders maintained that the measures remain necessary to sensitize the youth to traditional social expectations.
