Sonepat, May 18 — Ashoka University associate professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad was arrested from Delhi on Sunday in connection with controversial remarks he made on social media regarding Operation Sindoor, police said.
According to DCP Crime Narender Singh, two FIRs have been lodged at Rai police station—one based on a complaint by Yogesh Jatheri, a BJP Youth Morcha leader and sarpanch of Jatheri village, and another by Renu Bhatia, Chairperson of the Haryana State Commission for Women (HSCW).
Mahmudabad is accused of making posts that were allegedly disparaging toward women in the Indian Armed Forces and promoting communal disharmony. Police said the professor will be produced before a local court where remand will be sought for further investigation.
The HSCW had earlier taken suo motu cognizance of Mahmudabad’s comments and summoned him to appear on May 14, but he did not comply.
Responding to the accusations, Mahmudabad had posted on X that his remarks were “misread and misunderstood” by the Commission. “I am surprised that the Women’s Commission, while overreaching its jurisdiction, has misread and misunderstood my posts to such an extent that they have inverted their meaning,” he said.
Following the escalation, Chairperson Bhatia also visited Ashoka University on Thursday to inquire into the matter directly.
In a statement issued after the arrest, Ashoka University said it is aware of the developments and is currently ascertaining details of the case. “The university will cooperate with the police and local authorities in the investigation fully,” the statement read.
