Panchkula, May 20: 44-year-old Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the Panchkula Police was killed in a road accident late Sunday night, after his vehicle was hit by a speeding SUV near Sector 27. The deceased, Anil Kumar, was returning home from duty at the time of the crash.
According to a complaint filed by his son, Aneesh Kumar, the accident occurred around 10:10 p.m. while he was taking a walk near Om Hospital in Sector 27. He reportedly witnessed a white Volvo SUV, which he said was being driven in a reckless manner, collide with another vehicle near the Sector 26 turn towards Sector 2.
“It was only when I rushed to the scene that I realized my father was in the car,” said Aneesh. ASI Kumar was critically injured and immediately taken to Ojas Hospital in Sector 26, where he succumbed to his injuries early Monday morning.
The driver of the Volvo, identified as Ashok Kumar of Gharaunda, fled the scene after abandoning his vehicle, the complainant told police.
Anil Kumar was posted at the District Police Lines in Panchkula. Officials confirmed that investigations are ongoing and multiple police teams are conducting raids to trace the absconding driver.
“We are looking into all aspects of the incident, including the possibility of negligence and speeding,” said a senior investigating officer. “Efforts are underway to apprehend the accused at the earliest.”
The tragic loss of ASI Kumar has sent a wave of grief through the police department. “He was a disciplined officer and a dedicated member of the force,” said a colleague at the District Lines.
