Kapurthala, June 13 — The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) arrested Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Baldev Singh, posted at the Sultanpur Lodhi police station in Kapurthala district, on charges of demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹2,000.

According to a VB spokesperson, the arrest followed a complaint lodged by a Kapurthala resident through the Chief Minister’s anti-corruption helpline. The complainant alleged that the ASI demanded a bribe of ₹10,000 in exchange for allowing him to avoid appearing for a police investigation despite having secured anticipatory bail from a local court.

“The accused ASI had initially demanded ₹10,000 but later settled for ₹2,000 after repeated requests from the complainant,” the spokesperson stated.

Following a verification process, the VB found the allegations to be credible. A case has been registered against the ASI under the Prevention of Corruption Act at the VB police station, Jalandhar Range.

“The matter is under investigation and further action will be taken based on the findings,” the spokesperson added.

The Punjab Vigilance Bureau has intensified its crackdown on corrupt officials, encouraging the public to report bribery demands directly through the state’s anti-corruption helpline, which continues to receive a high volume of complaints.
