CHANDIGARH, August 7 — Punjabi singers Karan Aujla and Yo Yo Honey Singh are facing backlash over lyrics in their latest songs, with the Punjab State Women’s Commission demanding legal action against them for allegedly promoting misogyny and disrespecting women.

The Commission has written to the state Director General of Police (DGP), asking for an investigation into Aujla’s song “MF Gabru” and Singh’s “Millionaire”, both of which are widely circulating on social media.

“The lyrics are objectionable and deeply insulting to women’s dignity,” said Commission chairperson Manisha Gulati. “We have asked the DGP to investigate the songs and submit an action-taken report by 11 AM on August 11.”

Gulati further stated that prompt legal measures must follow if the lyrics are found to violate decency or promote derogatory content against women. The Commission has also requested relevant authorities to review the songs under applicable provisions of the law.

Both tracks have gained popularity online but have also drawn criticism from civil society and women’s rights activists, who argue that such content reinforces harmful stereotypes.

So far, neither Aujla nor Singh has issued a public statement in response to the controversy.

The Women’s Commission has reiterated its commitment to cracking down on media content that undermines women’s rights. “Celebrities have a responsibility to use their influence wisely,” said Gulati. “We will not tolerate content that normalizes disrespect.”
